Our Founder: A Legacy of Excellence in Fly Tying
D. Craig Black brings decades of expertise and deep-rooted passion to the world of fly fishing. Raised on Oregon’s legendary North Umpqua River, Craig was mentored by his father, Dennis J. Black, the visionary behind Umpqua Feather Merchants. Under Dennis’s guidance, Craig mastered the craft of fly tying with an unwavering focus on precision, durability, and innovation.
In the late 1980s, Craig was pivotal in establishing and leading Umpqua’s first fly-tying factory in Thailand, an experience that soon inspired the launch of his own dedicated facility—producing world-class flies exclusively for the North American market and beyond. Shortly thereafter he founded Black’s Flies Ltd., Canada, followed by Mae Fly LLC, USA, to efficiently facilitate wholesale distribution.

In 2025, Craig is honored to continue the Black family legacy by acquiring Dreamcast Flyfishing from his brother, James Black, following his well-earned retirement. This transition marks more than a business expansion—it symbolizes a lifelong commitment to quality, tradition, and craftsmanship, shared by two brothers raised in the heart of the industry.
